Emotional Eating Is Not Just About Food

Emotional Eating Is Not Just About Food

For many people, eating is connected with comfort, celebration, relief, and belonging. That is why changing eating habits can be difficult even when nutritional information is clear.  So, emotional eating is not just about food.

Imagine arriving home after a tense day determined to prepare a balanced meal. Before dinner is ready, you begin eating chips from the bag. The food may be meeting an immediate emotional need: a transition from work, relief from pressure, or a moment of pleasure. Shame rarely helps us understand this need. It usually adds more stress, which can strengthen the cycle.

A brief coherence practice before entering the kitchen can create a different starting point. You might slow your breathing, focus attention around the heart, and bring to mind appreciation for something simple. From that steadier state, you can ask whether you are physically hungry, emotionally depleted, or both. The answer may still include food, but it can become a more conscious choice.

Behavior change grows when awareness replaces automatic reaction and kindness replaces self-attack.

On Thursday, October 15 at 3:00 PM ET, I am offering a free, live one-hour introduction to the Coherence Advantage® program. If you are curious, register for the webinar here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUoc-iorzIpE9YocPHFA-gLDJfI3AdCTzxC
